POINTS OF INTEREST

Galesburg, named after its founder, George W. Gale, was settled in 1836 near Lake Storey and was named "Log City" because of the log dwellings. By 1837, additional settlers arrived and the city was erected at the present location with a total population of 232. In a small white cottage at 331 East Thrid Street, Carl Sandburg was born in 1878 to Swedish immigrants August and Clara Mathilda Anderson Sandburg. Knox College in Galesburg became the location of the famous Fifth Lincoln-Douglas Debate and was often visited by Carl Sandburg as a youth.
